Why can't I create an account in itunes?

It always asks me if I want to only view secure items on the page, so of course, I say yes. Then on the log in page, every time I try to make a password, it keeps saying in red, "target name/person/company ID required. There is no space for this and what is it anyways? I am only an individual, not a compnay. I have a new iphone and I need to sync it to itunes, and I can't even get an account started. Can I sync it without an account?
